Ofu Island is located on the eastern part of Vava’u, 20 minutes away from the airport. The placid water on the island makes it ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and kayaking – although those looking for more adventurous water activities could visit nearby islands for whale watching, kitesurfing, etc. Those interested in learning about the typical Tongan lifestyle would also enjoying strolling through the village and going on jungle walks to the back beaches.
If you’re used to air-conditioning and round-the-clock electricity, the Ofu Island Backpackers may not be for you. The guest rooms are in a solar-powered house in the village owned by a retired local teacher. Torches and kerosene lamps are provided as power supply can be unreliable at times. If you’re a traveller who seeks authentic Tongan island living, the Ofu Island Backpackers is one of your best options for Vava’u accommodation.
Two of the guest rooms have double beds with screened windows, while the remaining room can sleep up to 3. This back room doesn’t have screens but the single and double beds have mosquito netting so you can sleep comfortably. The house has a shared toilet and shower (no hot water), and a communal living area with a dining table and where guests can access the common kitchen equipped with basic utensils. You can also arrange to have your host prepare your meals for a minimal fee.
Kayaks and snorkelling equipment are available and can be used for free, but if you want quality equipment, make sure to bring your own. For island tours and cruises, you’d have to arrange boat transfers to Neiafu. For more information, get in touch with the host at the numbers listed below.
