Mafana Island Beach Backpackers succeeds in showing travellers how to strike that perfect balance between comfort and eco-friendly island living. Their beachfront bamboo tree fales on the island of Mafana on the eastern side of Vava’u are made almost entirely of wood and bamboo, but do not deprive guests of sleeping and relaxation comforts. All fales are equipped with hammocks, memory foam mattresses, soft pillows, mosquito nets, and fresh linens.
The Mafana island is easily accessible from the main town of Neiafu via a 15-minute boat ride. So while guests can enjoy the quiet and privacy at their bamboo fales on their secluded beach, they are still never too far from the main town and other islands in Vava’u. Unlike other resorts, Mafana Island Beach Backpackers also welcomes day trippers, and has family tents available for rent.
Amenities and Island Activities
All bamboo fales are beachfront and have their own private balcony, so guests can experience waking up to a beautiful view of the sun, sand, and clear blue South Pacific waters. The fales also have their own rainwater shower, although the self-catering kitchen area is open to all guests. Note that due to the low environmental impact the establishment operates with, they can only accommodate a maximum of 6 guests.
Mafana Island is ideal for kitesurfing, kayaking, swimming, and snorkelling because of its calm and crystal clear waters. You can also go reef-walking, island hopping, and visit the nearby “Disappearing Island.” Other activities offered at the Mafana Island Backpackers are humpback whale swimming, fishing, sailing, off-road karting, and jet kayaking.
